REVIEW

The Bench:  Overall, it’s a nice bench for the price. It has a slicker upholstery – which will help you keep it clean (however, I prefer a grippy material to better lock onto the bench when bench pressing).  It stands at 17.5” tall when in the flat position (therefore is in compliance with the IPF Specification of being 16.5” to 17.5” tall). I wish that you could store it vertically as-is….but you can always implement this hack to make it store vertically. LINK HERE: https://youtu.be/G4ruRIUbIxs

The Barbell: SKIP IT. It’s designed for Olympic Lifts (no center knurling and needle bearings). However, I think most F22 customers are not doing Olympic Lifts. If you are starting your home gym and want a Barbell designed for squatting, benching, and perhaps deadlifting…you want something else. First of all, you want center knurling for squats (it helps keep the barbell in position across your back). Also, this barbell’s needle bearings provide TOO MUCH SPIN for these lifts. This much spin is great for Olympic Lifts – but not for squatting, benching, and deadlifting. Having the plates slightly rotating when you are benching/squatting is just annoying. You will feel subtle vibration in your hands as the plates rotate. Therefore, I think most F22 customs should look elsewhere.

Bumper Plates: They have a nice, beveled edge – which makes it easier to pick up off the ground. The lettering is raised (not printed on). Are they are great deal? Are there better deals out there? Should You buy cheaper/more expensive ones?  I cannot say. I only have Bumpers from two companies: Major Fitness and Ritfit. Therefore, I can only compare these to one another. Result: Other than the tones in color – both companies bumpers appear to be identical.

The Rack: Well built. 14 Gauge Steel construction. It has a 1000 LBS advertised weight capacity. Squat and Bench with confidence.

Functional Trainer: I have had better and I have had worse. It has nylon pulleys, but in this price range that is what you should expect. Aluminum pulleys would be smoother but it would also add to the overall price tag. The guide rods are hollow. If they were solid steel- again - it would be smoother, but again would add to the overall price tag. The bearings in the trolley are my primary concern.  Even with the guide rods lubed up nicely,  I can still slightly hear/feel friction - specifically on both rear guide rods. That being said - I have experienced worse with other products out there. Bottom line: While the smoothness could be improved by using better bearings in the trolley,  I think the smoothness is still in line with the price tag. Therefore, in my opinion, this issue does not disqualify the F22 as a good option for your home gym when you are constrained by space/budget.

J Cups: AWESOME! These Sandwich-style J-Cups are really nice. I was very surprised that these J Cups  were included for “free.” Sandwich-style refers to having thick, durable plastic “sandwiched” between the steel so that the plastic sticks out further than the steel. This way – your barbell never comes into contact with the steel. Metal-to-metal contact can mess yup your barbell’s finish/knurling. These prvent metal-to-metal contact. These are great!

Spotter Arms: Nice! These spotter arms boast a 20” length  - which is far longer than any other “free/included” spotter arms for racks in this price range. Longer is better, because the longer the spotter arm – the safer you are. That being said, there is an issue. Each one has three countersunk screws connecting the plastic strip to the steel. The center screws were obviously added last – when they should have been added first. As a result, the plastic has a slight “bowing” - leaving a slight gap between the top surface of the steel and the underside of the plastic strip. This “bowing” shouldn’t affect the functionality – but should be fixed by Major Fitness for aesthetics.

Dip Bars: Nice! They are solid. Each handle offers two grips: one for wide grip and one for narrow grip. No knurling, but they do have rubber grips. Fortunately, there does not seem to be any rotation to the rubber grips and they seem to remain in place very well.

Miscellaneous Attachments: The T-Bar Row Handle, Stirrup Handles, Straight Bar, Lat Pull Down Bar, and Barbell clips. None of these items are especially nice. But none are total junk. I appreciate that they include these items so that – if you do not already own them – you can get started on your home gym journey “right out of the box.” I do not expect them to include “free” high-quality versions of these items because that will add to the overall price tag. The expectation is that you will upgrade these items on your own eventually. Specifically with the Straight bar, and Lat Pull down bar - you will eventually want to update to versions that have rotating attachment points. Rotating attachment points contribute to a much smoother/effective experience than attachments with fixed connection points.
