Cable Swing Reduction Hacks

In this video I propose 4 options. Here is the video:

Option 1: Tether Cable to Itself

With this option you will also need to prevent the Carabiners from getting caught on your “Wire Rope Clamps” (if you have a DIY Cable Pulley System that is). In the video BELOW I offer two options for dealing with this (1: Use Smaller Carabiners, or 2: Wrap Wire Rope camps with a Plastic Ball and Electrical Tape). Therefore, be sure to watch the video BELOW before pursuing this option.

Here is that video:

This option is effective and very quick to set up. The primary reason that I like it is when you breakdown your cable and store it away – you can keep the chains on. Therefore, the setup is the greatest positive with this option.

Option 2: Tether Load to Anchor

I heard other people discussing this option on Facebook, Reddit, etc. It appears to be a pretty popular option. This is especially popular with people who do NOT want to buy chains (they may already have bands), and/or they may not have a rack.

However, out of the 4 options, this option requires the MOST setup time and is the least effective at controlling swing. Therefore, I doubt I will be using it very much. Further, having the plates hit each other when lowering the load can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your plate’s paint job.

Option 3: Hang Chains

I love this option. It is more effective at controlling swing than Option 1 and 2 – and the setup time is next to nothing. The sound of the chains can be a little annoying – but that is not a big deal to me.

Option 4: Band Barrier

This is my favorite option. It is the MOST effective at controlling swing, has a quick setup time, and the dynamic resistance felt is superior to option 2 or 3.

Can you use just one band? Yes. You can use just one band (where the loading pin/cable is set inside of the loop of the band). However, I prefer two bands. Why? In the video I am using high-quality Rogue Monster bands, and I want to reduce any unnecessary wear and tear on these awesome bands. Using only one band will result in the loading pin rubbing against the band to some degree. Further, it is possible for the “Wire Rope Clamps” from your cable to rub against the bands. That being said, if you have cheap bands – go for it. Use just one. It will still be a very effective way to control cable swing.

Need high Quality Bands? Consider buying Rogue Monster Bands - and when you do please use my Rogue Affiliate link below (in the Shopping List Section) in order to support “the club.” Thank you!

Rankings

All 4 options are worth exploring. Further. some of these options will not work for everyone’s home gym setup. That being said, my personal rankings are:

  • Last place: Tether Load to Anchor

  • Third place: Tether Cable to Itself

  • Second Place: Hang Chains

  • First Place: Band Barrier (USING ROGUE MOSNTER BANDS)
